::
News, Past Lectures

Cancer has become an overwhelmingly prevalent disease affecting everyone in some way -- either personally, through loved ones, or on a more global scale, by the rising cost of health care.

There are many ways to fight back and treatments improve every day through the diligence and dedication of research. Radiation treatment has been taken one step further with the use of Proton-Photon Therapy.

Four leading physicians from Baptist Health South Florida will present the latest information and the science behind Proton-Photon Therapy in the treatment of cancer:

Leonard Kalman, M.D, Deputy Director and Chief Medical Director of the Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida. Dr. Kalman has been a practicing medical oncologist since the early 1990’s. He has led strategic planning, quality, payment reform and growth initiatives for the physician group Advanced Medical Specialties (AMS), which is now a part of the Baptist Health-owned physician practices.

Miguel Villalona-Calero, M.D., is a native of the Dominican Republic and serves as the Deputy Director and Chief Scientific Officer of Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida. Dr. Villalona-Calero is internationally recognized for his work in lung cancer, particularly in the area of designing new and more effective cancer drugs.

Jeff Boyd, M.D., is the Director of Translational Research and Genomic Medicine and Professor and Chair of Human and Molecular Genetics at Florida International University and Deputy Director and Scientific Officer of Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida.  Dr. Boyd is a mentor and principal investigator of four current ovarian studies and is well-published in his field. He is active in supporting a national and international presence in the field of genomic medicine, molecular genetics and genomics of women’s cancers.

Michael Zinner, M.D., is the Founding CEO and Executive Medical Director of Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida. Under his leadership the Institute will deliver leading-edge cancer treatment via state-of-the-art technology, including South Florida’s only Proton Therapy Center. From 2008 to 2010 Dr. Zinner was chairman of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons, which has more than 80,000 members. He is currently Vice Chairman of the Board of Regents of the College and Chairman of the Health Policy and Advocacy Committee for the American College of Surgeons. A Miami native, Dr. Zinner received his M.D. degree from the University of Florida and completed his surgical residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Joining these distinguished physicians will be John Kerstiens, C.P.A, M.B.A., and former CFO for Indiana University Health Proton Therapy Center. Mr. Kerstiens joined Baptist Health South Florida last year to serve as Director of Proton-Photon Radiation Oncology Operations.

Please join us at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in the Cultural Center Theatre for this informative and interesting lecture. Immediately following the lecture will be a cocktail reception where you will have an opportunity to meet the physicians.
