June Means More than Happy Father's Day!

Banner: June is Men's Health Month! The 18th of June is a special day for Dads, and June is also dedicated as Men’s Health Month. You don’t want to miss out on those special moments with your children or grandchildren, so here are a few reminders about your “blueprint to health.”

There are many preventable health problems. Prevention starts with an annual checkup by your physician to help identify issues early or before they become a problem. Pay attention to symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, excessive thirst and urination problems. Annual checkups should also include a skin and eye checkup by the appropriate specialist. Heart disease and cancer rank 24.6 percent and 23.5 percent as the leading causes of death in males of all ages, so again, prevention and early detection are important.

Did you know that more than 30 million men suffer from prostate conditions that negatively affect their quality of life? More than 50 percent of men in their 60s and as many as 90 percent in their 70s or older have symptoms of an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (non-cancerous swelling or enlargement of the prostate). Another reason to have that important yearly exam with your primary physician.

Make plans to set aside June as “catch-up month” for any needed exams, and don’t forget sunscreen, plenty of hydration, healthy eating habits and exercise.

During the summer months the Medical Center continues to offer physical therapy, dermatology appointments and Coolsculpting® (it’s not just for women!). Call 305-367-2600 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
