Lung Cancer Awareness Month: Screenings Available

::
News

November is National Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Regardless of age or gender, smoker or non-smoker, environmental exposure or family history, anyone can get lung cancer. Statistics show that in newly diagnosed lung cancer patients, 17.9 percent never smoked and 60 percent had kicked the smoking habit.

The United States Preventative Services Task Force has begun recommending annual CT lung cancer screenings for high-risk patients. These screenings have been a covered service of the health-care insurance exchange since January 2015.

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers a lung cancer screening with Low-Dose Computed Tomography once per year for people who meet all of these conditions:
  • They are between the ages of 55 and 77.
  • They're asymptomatic (they don’t have signs or symptoms of lung cancer).
  • They're either a current smoker or have quit smoking within the last 15 years.
  • They have a tobacco smoking history of at least 30 “pack years” (an average of one pack a day for 30 years).
  • They have obtained a written order from their physician or qualified non-physician practitioner.
The Medical Center offers this service to patients who meet these conditions. For patients who do not meet the conditions but would like to be screened, we offer special pricing. For further information or to schedule an appointment please call the Medical Center at 305-367-2600.

Flu vaccine is available at the Medical Center. Have you had your flu shot?
