Physical Therapy Introduces Thomas Barreiro, D.P.T.

The Medical Center is pleased to announce the addition of Thomas Barreiro to its Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Department. He is a native Floridian and grew up in Homestead, Florida.

When asked what drew Barreiro to a career in Physical Therapy, he says “I was born and raised in a close-knit community of Portuguese immigrants. Sports have always held a special place in my heart, particularly soccer, which I played passionately for many years. My journey into the world of physical therapy began during my sophomore year of high school when I underwent surgery, specifically a meniscectomy. This experience ignited my passion for the field, inspiring me to pursue a career as a physical therapist.

“I embarked on my academic journey at Florida International University, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in recreational therapy. This phase of my education afforded me valuable opportunities to work with the elderly and individuals with disabilities, significantly contributing to my development as a well-rounded therapist.

“Later,” he says, “I continued my studies at Florida International University, this time focusing on physical therapy. During my educational journey, I deepened my interest in biomechanics, strength and conditioning, and working with athletes.

“While completing my clinical rotations, I gained valuable experience in inpatient care, primarily working with stroke patients and individuals with various neurological conditions. My clinical experiences took place at Baptist Health Homestead and Encompass Health.

“Following my graduation, I began my professional career as a concierge-based physical therapist in Pinecrest, Florida, where I continued to explore the benefits of incorporating Pilates into rehabilitation, a practice I thoroughly enjoyed. This experience has allowed me to provide a more holistic and effective approach to patient care.

“Beyond my professional life I’m an avid fitness enthusiast, spending my free time training at the gym. I’m also a passionate sports fan and enjoy watching various sports events.”
